Armadillidium aserratum | The Serrated Armor Isopod

If you appreciate the rugged, prehistoric look of an armored tank, the Armadillidium aserratum is the species for you. Hailing from the Mediterranean, this isopod is named for its serrated and granulated exoskeleton, which features a beautiful matte texture unlike the glossy shells of common pill bugs.

Typically displaying a sophisticated slate-grey to deep charcoal palette, many individuals show subtle lighter mottling along the edges of their "armor" plates. They are a medium-to-large species with a robust, high-domed shape. What truly sets them apart is their docile nature; they are slow movers and very bold foragers, making them excellent candidates for observation in a naturalistic bioactive setup.

🧬 Species Highlights

  • Scientific Name: Armadillidium aserratum
  • Visuals: Matte, slate-grey body with a distinct "serrated" or granular texture on the shell.
  • Morfología: High-domed and sturdy. They roll into a very tight, textured ball.
  • Size: Medium-Large (reaches approximately 1.8cm).
  • Behavior: Very calm and methodical; they are not skittish and stay visible on the surface.
  • Hardiness: High; they are very resilient once established in a temperate environment.

🛠️ Care & Setup

A. aserratum thrives in a classic Mediterranean-style setup where they can choose between different moisture levels.

  • Humidity: 50–60%. Keep 1/3 of the enclosure damp with Sphagnum moss and 2/3 dry with heavy leaf litter.
  • Temperature: 20–26°C (68–79°F). They prefer stable, room-temperature environments.
  • Ventilation: High. Like many Mediterranean Armadillidium, they require excellent airflow to prevent respiratory issues.
  • Substrate: A calcium-rich organic mix (soil, wood, and leaf litter). They love hiding under flat pieces of cork bark or limestone.

🥗 Diet & Nutrition

  • Leaf Litter: They are voracious leaf-eaters. Provide a constant supply of Oak, Beech, or Magnolia.
  • Calcium: Crucial. Their textured, thick shells require constant mineral access via cuttlebone or limestone.
  • Protein: Moderate protein drive. Offer dried shrimp, fish flakes, or isopod pellets once a week.
  • Vegetables: They enjoy occasional snacks of squash or sweet potato.
