Armadillidium Flavoscutatum
Armadillidium flavoscutatum | The Golden Shield
The Armadillidium flavoscutatum is the definition of understated luxury in the isopod hobby. While other species rely on neon colors, the Flavoscutatum features a sophisticated charcoal-to-deep-espresso base adorned with symmetrical golden-yellow splashes. These markings often form a "shield-like" pattern down the center of their back, giving them a regal, armored appearance.
What truly sets this species apart is its calm and steady temperament. They are robust, medium-sized isopods that are slightly more tolerant of varying conditions than some of their high-ventilation cousins, making them a fantastic "next step" for keepers moving beyond common hobby species.
🧬 Species Highlights
- Scientific Name: Armadillidium flavoscutatum
- Visuals: Dark satin-grey body with organized, buttery-yellow dorsal spots.
- Behavior: Calm and methodical; they are active foragers but less "skittish" than A. klugii.
- Size: Medium (reaches approximately 1.5cm - 1.8cm).
- Hardiness: Excellent; once established, they are a very stable and long-lived species.
🛠️ Care & Setup
The "Golden Shield" thrives in a classic Mediterranean setup. They appreciate a bit more humidity stability than the "Clown" varieties but still require room to breathe.
- Humidity: 60–70%. Provide a gradual moisture gradient. Maintain a lush patch of damp Sphagnum moss on one side and a dry, leaf-littered area on the other.
- Temperature: 20–25°C (68–77°F).
- Ventilation: Moderate to High. Good airflow is necessary to prevent the growth of harmful bacteria in the substrate.
- Decor: They love to hide under flat pieces of cork bark or curved pieces of hardwood.
🥗 Diet & Nutrition
- Leaf Litter: They are great consumers of leaf litter. Oak, Magnolia, and Birch are excellent choices.
- Calcium: Mandatory. As with all Armadillidium, a constant supply of cuttlebone or limestone is required for shell development.
- Protein: Provide a protein boost once a week using dried shrimp, fish flakes, or specialized isopod diet.
- Fungi & Biofilm: They are excellent at grazing on the natural growth found on decaying wood.
