Armadillidium Gestroi
Armadillidium gestroi | The Italian Giant
The Armadillidium gestroi is a heavyweight champion of the isopod hobby. Known for its massive size and striking "Bumblebee" coloration, this species features a high-domed, jet-black body decorated with bright, sunshine-yellow spots. Unlike smaller species, the Gestroi has a substantial, heavy feel and a smooth, glossy exoskeleton that makes it look like a piece of high-end automotive design.
Despite their intimidating size, they are incredibly peaceful and make one of the best display species available. They are bold, slow-moving, and spend a significant amount of time on top of the substrate, allowing you to appreciate their vibrant patterns and impressive scale.
🧬 Species Highlights
- Scientific Name: Armadillidium gestroi
- Visuals: Massive jet-black body with bold, symmetrical yellow spots.
- Size: Giant – Can reach lengths of 2.0cm to 2.5cm.
- Behavior: Calm, bold, and surface-active; they are excellent "visual" pets.
- Durability: High; they are robust and long-lived once established.
🛠️ Care & Setup
Because of their Mediterranean origins, Gestroi prefer a setup that isn't overly humid or stagnant.
- Humidity: 50–70%. Distinct Gradient Required: Keep one corner very damp with Sphagnum moss for molting, while the rest of the enclosure remains dry and well-ventilated.
- Temperature: 20–26°C (68–79°F).
- Ventilation: High. They require fresh, moving air. Stagnant, swampy conditions are the most common cause of failure with this species.
- Substrate: A deep, calcium-rich organic mix with plenty of rotten wood and leaf litter.
🥗 Diet & Nutrition
- Leaf Litter: They are voracious consumers of hardwood leaves (Oak, Magnolia, and Beech).
- Calcium: Crucial. Their large, thick shells require constant mineral access via cuttlebone or limestone.
- Protein: They have a high protein drive. Offer dried shrimp, minnows, or fish pellets 2 times per week to support their growth.
- Supplemental: They love grazing on "isopod cakes" and yellow vegetables like squash.
💡 Expert Success Tip
Armadillidium gestroi are slow-burn breeders. They take longer to reach sexual maturity than smaller species, but once they start, they are very consistent. To encourage breeding, provide plenty of vertical cork bark and flat stones. They love to hide in large groups in dry crevices during the day and emerge together at feeding time.
