Armadillidium klugii "Dubrovnik" | The Pearl of the Adriatic

The Armadillidium klugii "Dubrovnik" is a sophisticated locality of the famous Clown Isopod. While it shares the same striking red "skirt" and white spots as other klugii strains, the "Dubrovnik" is distinguished by its softer charcoal-to-slate grey base and exceptionally bright, crisp white dots. The spots on this strain are often larger and more defined, creating a cleaner aesthetic that mimics the limestone architecture of its namesake city.

These are active, hardy, and visually mesmerizing. If you are looking for a Clown Isopod that leans into a "high-contrast" look with a legendary personality, the Dubrovnik locality is an elite addition to any collection.

🧬 Species Highlights

  • Scientific Name: Armadillidium klugii "Dubrovnik"
  • Visuals: Slate-grey body with large, vivid white spots and a bright orange-red perimeter.
  • Behavior: Highly active and inquisitive; they are excellent display animals.
  • Morfología: Classic high-domed Armadillidium shape with a smooth, glossy finish.
  • Size: Medium (1.5cm - 1.8cm).

🛠️ Care & Setup

The Dubrovnik strain thrives in a Mediterranean-style setup. They are robust but have specific preferences for air quality.

  • Humidity: 50–60%. Gradient is Essential: Provide a damp moss corner for hydration and molting, but keep 70% of the enclosure dry.
  • Temperature: 20–26°C (68–79°F).
  • Ventilation: High. Like all A. klugii, they are sensitive to "stale" air. Ensure your enclosure has excellent cross-ventilation.
  • Substrate: Organic soil mix enriched with calcium and plenty of decaying wood.

🥗 Diet & Nutrition

  • Leaf Litter: They prefer a foundation of Oak and Magnolia leaves.
  • Calcium: Mandatory. Their thick shells require constant mineral access via cuttlebone or limestone.
  • High Protein Drive: To ensure a healthy, breeding colony, provide dried shrimp, fish flakes, or isopod pellets twice a week.
  • Foraging: They love to graze on lichen and biofilm found on natural cork bark.

💡 Expert Success Tip

The "Dubrovnik" strain is often reported to be slightly more prolific than other klugii localities once settled. To encourage breeding, provide stacked slate or flat cork pieces in the drier section of the enclosure. They love to congregate in these tight, dry crevices during the day and will emerge en masse to forage at night or during feeding time.
