Armadillidium klugii Slano "Skeleton" | The Architectural Clown

The Armadillidium klugii Slano "Skeleton" is a top-tier locality-specific morph that redefines the "Clown" aesthetic. What sets the "Skeleton" apart is its ultra-dark, midnight-black base and the unique positioning of its spots. In this strain, the white markings are often elongated or so crisp that they resemble a skeletal ribcage or a high-contrast spine against the dark exoskeleton.

Finished with a sharp, neon-orange skirt, the Slano Skeleton is widely considered one of the most visually "aggressive" and beautiful Armadillidium in the hobby. If you want a display species that looks like a piece of living gothic art, this is the one.

🧬 Species Highlights

  • Scientific Name: Armadillidium klugii (Slano Locality)
  • Visuals: Jet-black body with high-definition white "skeletal" spots and a vivid orange perimeter.
  • Behavior: Bold, active, and curious. They are legendary for being "out and about" during the day.
  • Morfología: Smooth, glossy shell with high-domed protection.
  • Size: Medium (reaches approximately 1.5cm - 1.8cm).

🛠️ Care & Setup

The Slano Skeleton is a hardy Mediterranean species, but like all klugii, it demands specific humidity zones to thrive.

  • Humidity: 50–60%. Strict Gradient Required: Keep one corner of Sphagnum moss very damp for molting, while keeping 75% of the enclosure dry.
  • Temperature: 20–26°C (68–79°F).
  • Ventilation: Very High. This species is native to breezy coastal areas. Stagnant air is their biggest enemy—ensure excellent cross-ventilation.
  • Substrate: Calcium-rich organic mix with plenty of leaf litter and decaying wood.

🥗 Diet & Nutrition

  • Leaf Litter: They thrive on a foundation of Oak, Magnolia, and Beech leaves.
  • Calcium: Mandatory. Their thick, dark armor requires constant mineral access via cuttlebone or limestone.
  • Protein Drive: High. To maintain a peaceful colony and healthy growth, provide dried shrimp, fish flakes, or pellets 2 times per week.
  • Lichen: They love grazing on lichen-covered sticks and textured cork bark.

💡 Expert Success Tip

The "Skeleton" pattern is most striking in adults. To showcase their unique markings, use grey slate or dark volcanic rock as decor. The contrast between the jet-black "Skeleton" and the stone is breathtaking. Because they are bold foragers, they make incredible additions to bioactive setups for semi-arid reptiles, provided they have a "humid retreat" to hide in.
