Armadillidium Vulgare Albino
Armadillidium vulgare "Albino" | The Crimson-Eyed Ghost
The Armadillidium vulgare "Albino" is a mesmerizing mutation that transforms the common "Roly-Poly" into a high-end collector's item. These isopods display a beautiful range of creamy ivory, soft yellow, and peach tones. The most distinct feature of this strain is their ruby-red eyes, which confirm their true albinism.
They retain the legendary "tank-like" hardiness and active personality of the Vulgare species but add a bright, ethereal aesthetic that stands out brilliantly against dark soil and green moss.
🧬 Species Highlights
- Scientific Name: Armadillidium vulgare "Albino"
- Visuals: Creamy white/yellowish body with distinct red/pink eyes.
- Behavior: Very active and "friendly"; they are famous for perfectly rolling into a ball (conglobation).
- Adaptability: Extremely hardy; can thrive in a wide range of environments.
- Size: Medium; reaching approximately 1.5cm - 1.8cm.
🛠️ Care & Setup
The Albino Vulgare is incredibly forgiving, making it an ideal choice for bioactive setups or standalone colonies.
- Humidity: 50–60%. They prefer a Dry/Moist Gradient. Ensure one side has damp Sphagnum moss while the rest remains dry.
- Temperature: 18–24°C (65–75°F). They are very comfortable at standard room temperatures.
- Ventilation: Moderate. They are much less sensitive to "stuffy" air than tropical species but still appreciate airflow.
- Substrate: Any high-quality organic isopod mix with added calcium.
🥗 Diet & Nutrition
- Leaf Litter: They are "trash cans" of the isopod world and will eat almost any hardwood leaves.
- Calcium: Essential. Provide cuttlebone or limestone to keep their shells strong and colors bright.
- Protein: They have a moderate protein drive. Dried shrimp or fish flakes once a week will encourage faster breeding.
- Fresh Treats: They are very fond of carrot, squash, and even cucumber.
