Armadillidium Vulgare "Mix Red And Orange"
Armadillidium vulgare "Mix Red & Orange" | The Sunset Blend
The Armadillidium vulgare "Mix Red and Orange" is a vibrant explosion of color for keepers who want a lively, multi-toned colony. This mix features a stunning combination of high-expression Red and bright Tangerine Orange individuals. While they are the same hardy species, the mix of shades creates a beautiful "lava" effect as they move through the leaf litter.
A. vulgare is the classic "Pill Bug" known for its ability to roll into a perfect, tight ball. These color morphs aren't just pretty—they are incredibly resilient, making them the perfect choice for beginners, school projects, or as a colorful "Clean Up Crew" for temperate bioactive setups.
🧬 Species Highlights
- Scientific Name: Armadillidium vulgare (Red & Orange Morphs)
- Visuals: A mix of deep brick-red, bright apricot, and sunset orange tones.
- Behavior: Very bold and active; they are often seen climbing and exploring.
- Size: Medium (reaches approximately 1.5cm - 1.8cm).
- Hardiness: Maximum. One of the most adaptable and "bulletproof" species in the hobby.
- Reproduction: Highly prolific; you will see your colony grow and change colors quickly!
🛠️ Care & Setup
The "Sunset Blend" is extremely versatile but performs best in a standard temperate environment.
- Humidity: 50–70%. They are very tolerant of dry spells but always need a "hydration station" of damp Sphagnum moss.
- Temperature: 15–27°C (59–80°F). They are very comfortable at room temperature.
- Ventilation: Moderate. Standard terrarium ventilation is more than enough for this species.
- Substrate: Any organic soil mix with plenty of leaf litter and decaying wood.
🥗 Diet & Nutrition
- Leaf Litter: They are excellent recyclers and will eat almost any hardwood leaf (Oak, Maple, etc.).
- Calcium: Mandatory. To maintain their bright red and orange shells, provide constant access to cuttlebone.
- Protein: They love fish flakes, dried shrimp, or isopod pellets once a week.
- Scraps: They are the "trash cans" of the isopod world and will happily eat vegetable scraps like carrots or squash.
💡 Expert Success Tip
Because this is a mix of two colors, the future generations will produce a beautiful spectrum of intermediate shades, including some with unique spotting or "calico" patterns. If you want to keep the colors intense, occasionally feed them red bell peppers or carrots—the natural carotenoids help maintain the "fire" in their orange and red exoskeletons.
