Armadillidium werneri "Orange" | The Golden Greek Shield

The Armadillidium werneri "Orange" is the ultimate luxury morph for Armadillidium enthusiasts. While the standard Werneri is known for its "Giant Clown" look with black and white tones, the Orange morph transforms the species into a masterpiece of warm color. It features a bright apricot-to-tangerine base decorated with the signature five rows of creamy white spots.

Because of its unique, flattened shape and massive width, the "Orange Werneri" looks like a piece of living amber moving across your terrarium. This is a rare, slow-to-produce morph that serves as a stunning centerpiece for any high-end bioactive display.

🧬 Species Highlights

  • Scientific Name: Armadillidium werneri "Orange"
  • Visuals: Wide, "pancake" shaped body in vibrant orange with 5 rows of white spots.
  • Morphology: Highly flattened and broad; much wider than typical "pill bugs."
  • Behavior: Bold and surface-active; they are excellent display animals.
  • Size: Large (reaches approximately 2cm).
  • Rarity: Very High – A sought-after designer morph for elite collectors.

🛠️ Care & Setup

The Orange Werneri is a Mediterranean specialist that thrives in "airy" environments.

  • Humidity: 50–60%. Strict Moisture Gradient: They require a mostly dry enclosure with one specific "wet corner" of Sphagnum moss for molting.
  • Temperature: 20–26°C (68–79°F).
  • Ventilation: Very High. This is the secret to success. They need excellent airflow to mimic the breezy Greek hillsides.
  • Substrate: A calcium-rich organic mix. They love to wedge themselves under flat pieces of wood or stone.

🥗 Diet & Nutrition

  • Leaf Litter: They are fond of Oak and Magnolia. Keep a deep, dry layer available.
  • Calcium: Mandatory. To maintain their wide, heavy armor and vibrant color, provide constant access to cuttlebone or limestone.
  • Protein Drive: Moderate to High. Offer dried shrimp, fish flakes, or isopod pellets 1-2 times weekly.
  • Grazing: They love grazing on white rotted wood and lichen.
