Product Description

Porcellio baeticensis "Violet" is a stunning and relatively new arrival to the high-end isopod hobby. Belonging to the elite group of "Spanish Giants," this species is prized for its unique and ethereal coloration. Unlike other giants, the "Violet" morph displays a deep, dusky charcoal body that, when caught in the light, reveals a beautiful purple-to-violet iridescence.

With a robust, elongated body and impressively long antennae, P. baeticensis is a visual masterpiece. They feature wide, translucent margins (epimera) that create a ghostly frame around their dark, colorful backs. They are active, inquisitive, and bold, making them a fantastic display species for those who want a "giant" with a color palette unlike anything else in the genus.

Perfect for high-end Mediterranean displays, advanced collectors, and those looking to add a touch of rare color to a specialized bioactive setup.

Species Information

  • Species: Porcellio baeticensis "Violet"
  • Morph: "Violet"
  • Origin: Southern Spain (Baetic System / Andalusia)
  • Size: ~3.0–3.5 cm (A true Spanish Giant)
  • Activity Level: High / Very Bold
  • Rarity: Rare / High-End Collector Choice

Care Requirements

  • Difficulty: Moderate (Requires careful balance of air and moisture)
  • Humidity: Low to Medium. Like most Spanish species, they are extremely sensitive to "stuffy" or wet environments. A sharp moisture gradient is essential: 80% of the enclosure must be bone-dry, with one dedicated corner of damp sphagnum moss.
  • Temperature: 20–27°C (68–80°F). They thrive in warm, stable conditions.
  • Ventilation: Extreme/Maximum. High-volume cross-ventilation is mandatory to ensure their long-term health and successful molting.
  • Substrate: Deep organic soil mix enriched with calcium, limestone, and a thick layer of dry leaf litter.

Must Provide:

  • Cork Bark Hides: They love to congregate on the underside of dry, tilted bark.
  • Massive amounts of dry leaf litter: Oak and Beech are preferred.
  • A tiny, consistently damp "hydration station" in one corner.
  • Constant access to high-quality calcium (cuttlebone).

Origin and Distribution

Porcellio baeticensis is native to the Baetic System, a mountain range in Southern Spain.

Evolved in high-altitude, rocky Mediterranean landscapes, these isopods are adapted to survive in environments where the air is dry but limestone crevices provide small pockets of humidity. The "Violet" coloration is a natural variation found in specific populations, which has been stabilized in the hobby to provide keepers with this extraordinary aesthetic.

Diet

  • Primary: Large quantities of dry leaf litter and decaying white-rotted wood.
  • Protein: High Demand. Provide dried shrimp, fish flakes, or minnows 2-3 times a week to support their large frames.
  • Vitamins: Occasional fresh vegetables like squash, carrots, or sweet potato.
  • Calcium: Absolute Requirement. Crucial for maintaining their thick, iridescent carapaces.

What You Receive
