Product Description

Porcellio bolivari (The "Spanish Giant") is widely considered the ultimate prize for isopod enthusiasts. This species is a true titan of the Mediterranean, famous for its massive size and its incredible, prehistoric silhouette. It is easily recognized by its broad, powerful body and its exceptionally long appendages (antennae and uropods) that make it look much larger than almost any other terrestrial crustacean.

Their coloration is a beautiful, frosted slate-grey with translucent, wide margins that catch the light, giving them a ghostly yet regal appearance. P. bolivari is a bold and high-energy species; they do not hide away all day. Instead, they are often seen actively patrolling their territory or climbing over cork bark with a steady, confident gait.

Perfect for high-end display terrariums, advanced collectors, and anyone looking for the most impressive "Giant" in the hobby.

Species Information

  • Species: Porcellio bolivari "Lemonade"
  • Origin: Southern Spain (Andalusia / Alicante region)
  • Size: ~3.5–4.5 cm (One of the largest species in existence)
  • Activity Level: High / Very Bold
  • Rarity: Rare / High-End Prestige Species

Care Requirements

  • Difficulty: Advanced (Requires precise environmental control)
  • Humidity: Very Low. This species is extremely sensitive to dampness. They require a bone-dry enclosure with only one very small, localized "hydration station" (damp moss) in a single corner.
  • Temperature: 22–28°C (72–82°F). They thrive in warm, stable Mediterranean conditions.
  • Ventilation: Extreme/Maximum. Absolute cross-ventilation is mandatory. P. bolivari will not survive in stagnant, humid, or "stuffy" air.
  • Substrate: Well-draining organic soil mixed with crushed limestone and a thick layer of dry hardwood leaf litter.

Must Provide:

  • Large Cork Bark: They love to congregate on the underside of dry, vertical bark.
  • Massive amounts of dry leaf litter: They are voracious eaters.
  • A tiny, consistently damp "hydration station" in one corner.
  • Constant access to high-quality calcium (cuttlebone).

Origin and Distribution

Porcellio bolivari is endemic to the sun-baked, rocky landscapes of Southeastern Spain.

They have evolved to survive in one of the hottest and driest environments in Europe. In the wild, they are extreme specialists, living deep within limestone caves and rocky crevices where they are protected from the intense sun but benefit from the breezy, dry air. Because of their specialized origin, they have almost zero tolerance for high humidity, making them a rewarding "challenge" species for experienced keepers.

Diet

  • Primary: They consume huge quantities of dry leaf litter (Oak/Beech) and decaying wood.
  • Protein: Very High Demand. To support their massive size, they need frequent protein (dried shrimp, fish flakes, or minnows) 2-3 times a week.
  • Vitamins: Occasional fresh vegetables like carrots or squash.
  • Calcium: Absolute Requirement. Crucial for their massive, thick carapaces and successful molting.

What You Receive
