Product Description

Porcellio duboscqui "Troglophila" is a spectacular member of the "Spanish/Mediterranean Giant" group. Despite its name, this is not a small or cave-exclusive species; it is a massive, surface-dwelling titan that rivals the famous P. hoffmannseggi in both presence and elegance.

This species is defined by its elongated, powerful body and its exceptionally long, spear-like antennae and uropods. Its coloration is a sophisticated, matte slate-grey to brownish-charcoal, often featuring a subtle "frosted" texture and wide, pale margins (the skirt). The "Troglophila" lineage is particularly prized for its imposing size and regal movement. It is an active, bold isopod that dominates the terrarium floor with its prehistoric silhouette.

Perfect for large-scale Mediterranean displays, advanced collectors of giant species, and those who want a "Titan" with a unique and ancient aesthetic.

Species Information

  • Species: Porcellio duboscqui "Troglophila"
  • Locality: "Troglophila"
  • Origin: Western Mediterranean (Southern France / Spain)
  • Size: ~3.0–4.0 cm (A true giant species)
  • Activity Level: High / Very Bold
  • Rarity: Uncommon / High-End Collector Choice

Care Requirements

  • Difficulty: Moderate (Requires space and airflow)
  • Humidity: Low to Medium. Like all Mediterranean giants, they are very sensitive to stagnant, wet air. They require a strict moisture gradient: 80% of the enclosure should be bone-dry, with one dedicated corner of damp sphagnum moss.
  • Temperature: 20–27°C (68–80°F). They thrive in warm, stable conditions.
  • Ventilation: Extreme/Maximum. High-volume cross-ventilation is mandatory for their respiratory health and successful molting.
  • Substrate: Deep organic soil mix enriched with calcium, limestone, and a heavy layer of dry leaf litter.

Must Provide:

  • Large Cork Bark Hides: They love to congregate on the underside of dry, tilted bark.
  • Massive amounts of dry leaf litter: Oak and Beech are essential as a primary food source.
  • A dedicated "hydration station" (damp moss corner).
  • Constant access to high-quality calcium (cuttlebone).

Origin and Distribution

Porcellio duboscqui is native to the Western Mediterranean, particularly found in the rocky, limestone-rich landscapes of Southern France and Northern Spain.

The "Troglophila" name refers to its natural affinity for rocky crevices and the "twilight zones" of caves and stone outcrops, where it uses its massive size and long appendages to navigate deep fissures. Evolution has turned this species into a resilient survivor of semi-arid climates, capable of withstanding dry air as long as it has access to a moist retreat.

Diet

  • Primary: Voracious consumers of dry leaf litter and decaying white-rotted wood.
  • Protein: Very High Demand. To support their massive frames, provide dried shrimp, fish flakes, or minnows 2-3 times a week.
  • Vitamins: Occasional fresh vegetables like squash, carrots, or sweet potato.
  • Calcium: Absolute Requirement. Essential for their thick, calcified armor and heavy molting cycles.

What You Receive

  • Starter culture of X Porcellio duboscqui "Troglophila" isopods.
  • Mixed sizes (juveniles and sub-adults) to ensure a strong, breeding-ready colony.
