Porcellio Echinatus "Red Edge"
Product Description
Porcellio echinatus (often called the "Spiny Isopod") is a unique and visually stunning species that stands out for its prehistoric appearance. Unlike the smooth or slightly bumpy texture of other Porcellio species, P. echinatus is covered in prominent, pointed granules that give it a spiky, armored look.
This is a medium-sized isopod that moves with a deliberate, steady pace. While it is a hardy species, it is particularly prized by hobbyists who enjoy observing its intricate morphology. It functions perfectly as a clean-up crew for Mediterranean or temperate setups, but its unusual texture makes it a favorite for display terrariums and dedicated isopod collectors.
Perfect for specialized bioactive enclosures, dryer Mediterranean setups, and collectors looking for a unique, "armored" aesthetic.
Species Information
- Species: Porcellio echinatus "Red Edge"
- Origin: Western Mediterranean (Primarily Spain and Portugal)
- Size: ~1.2–1.5 cm (adult)
- Activity Level: Moderate
- Rarity: Uncommon / Collector's Favorite
Care Requirements
- Difficulty: Easy to Medium
- Humidity: Low to Medium. This species prefers a drier environment than most. It is vital to provide a "dry zone" and a small "hydration station" (damp moss).
- Temperature: 20–26°C / 68–79°F.
- Ventilation: Very High. Excellent airflow is essential to prevent stagnant air, which they do not tolerate well.
- Substrate: Well-draining organic soil mix with plenty of leaf litter and limestone or calcium rocks.
Must Provide:
- Dry leaf litter (Oak or Beech)
- Flat pieces of bark for hiding
- High ventilation/airflow
- Constant calcium source (Cuttlebone)
Origin and Distribution
Porcellio echinatus is native to the Western Mediterranean, specifically throughout the Iberian Peninsula (Spain and Portugal). Unlike the cosmopolitan species that have conquered the world, P. echinatus is more specialized to its native scrublands and rocky environments.
Because they evolved in the Mediterranean climate, they are exceptionally well-adapted to semi-arid conditions and can handle lower humidity levels that would be fatal to other isopods, provided they have access to a small moist retreat.
Diet
- Primary: Hardwood leaf litter and decaying wood.
- Vitamins: Occasional fresh vegetables (carrots are a favorite).
- Protein: Dried shrimp, fish flakes, or insect frass.
- Calcium: Extremely important for their highly textured, calcified exoskeleton.
What You Receive
- Starter culture of X Porcellio echinatus isopods.
- Mixed sizes (juveniles and adults) for a healthy colony start.
