Porcellio expansus "Orange Tortosa" | The Fiery Spanish Titan

If you want an isopod that stops people in their tracks, the Porcellio expansus "Orange Tortosa" is the undisputed champion. This premium, extra-large species from the Tortosa region of Spain is famous for its incredible width and dramatic, wide-skirted profile. This "skirt" (periopleuron) is so extreme it looks like a translucent orange wing, giving them an almost magical, prehistoric "skiff" body plan.

In the "Orange Tortosa" locality, the entire exoskeleton glows with a vibrant, high-saturated tangerine-to-apricot hue. They are slow-moving, bold giants with long antennae, a confident demeanor, and a stunning "lava" effect when a group huddles together. For collectors who specialize in the "Giants" of the isopod world, this is the ultimate centerpiece.

🧬 Species Highlights

  • Scientific Name: Porcellio expansus "Orange Tortosa"
  • Visuals: Huge, wide body with a deeply saturated orange color and high-translucency skirts.
  • Morfología: Extra-Wide Skirts. An extreme, flattened profile designed to hug surfaces.
  • Size: Extra Large – Can reach massive lengths of 2.8cm to 3.2cm.
  • Behavior: Very calm, bold, and surface-active; they are excellent display animals.
  • Rarity: A premium, high-value locality highly prized by advanced collectors.

🛠️ Care & Setup

The "Orange Tortosa" is a Mediterranean specialist. They require a setup that respects their native climate—they must never be in stagnant or overly wet conditions.

  • Humidity: Moderate to Low (40–60%). Provide a Strong Gradient: This is crucial. They need a deep, consistently damp "hydration station" (Sphagnum moss) in one specific area, but the rest of the enclosure must stay dry and airy.
  • Temperature: 22–26°C (72–79°F). They prefer stable, warm-temperate conditions.
  • Ventilation: Extreme High. Stagnant air is fatal. Use a full mesh lid or massive cross-ventilation to ensure constant fresh air circulation.
  • Space: Because of their massive size and wide stance, they require a spacious enclosure.

🥗 Diet & Nutrition

  • Leaf Litter: They have a huge metabolism. Provide deep layers of Oak and Magnolia leaves constantly.
  • Protein Drive: High. These giants need significant protein. Offer dried shrimp, minnows, or specific isopod pellets 2–3 times per week.
  • Calcium Vitality: Essential. Their large shells need constant access to cuttlebone.
  • Supplement: They are excellent grazers and will consume lichen and various fungi.

💡 Expert Success Tip

Porcellio expansus are vertical surface specialists. They will rarely be seen walking on the soil. To keep them thriving, provide stacked pieces of flat cork bark or slate (like the surface they are on in the picture). They love to "pancake" themselves between surfaces. To see them at their absolute best, use darker natural materials (dark cork, dark slate, dark soil), which makes their vibrant orange color look radioactive!
