Product Description

Porcellio flavomarginatus "Crete" is a premium locality-specific variant of the Yellow-Margin Isopod, native to the rugged landscapes of the island of Crete. This isopod is a true "giant" and a masterpiece of Mediterranean evolution, famous for its extreme pancake-like morphology and its wide, shield-shaped body.

The "Crete" locality is highly coveted by collectors for its incredible contrast: a dark, charcoal-grey center offset by exceptionally broad, creamy-yellow margins. Their flattened shape is an adaptation that allows them to press firmly against limestone rocks to avoid predators and conserve moisture in their arid native habitat.

Perfect for high-end Mediterranean displays, advanced collectors, and enthusiasts of "giant" isopod species with unique architectural forms.

Species Information

  • Species: Porcellio flavomarginatus
  • Locality: Crete (Greece)
  • Size: ~2.5 cm (Very broad and flat)
  • Activity Level: Moderate / Bold
  • Rarity: Rare / High-End Collector Choice

Care Requirements

  • Difficulty: Moderate (Strict attention to ventilation is required)
  • Humidity: Low to Medium. This locality is highly sensitive to damp, stagnant air. A strict moisture gradient is mandatory: keep 80-90% of the enclosure bone-dry, with only one small corner of damp sphagnum moss.
  • Temperature: 22–28°C (72–82°F). They thrive in warm, stable environments.
  • Ventilation: Extreme/Maximum. Cross-ventilation is non-negotiable; they require constant fresh airflow.
  • Substrate: Well-draining organic soil mix with a heavy layer of dry hardwood leaf litter and limestone chips.

Must Provide:

  • Large, flat pieces of cork bark or limestone (they love to hide in vertical, dry crevices).
  • Abundant dry hardwood leaf litter (Oak/Beech).
  • A small, consistently damp "hydration station" in one corner.
  • Continuous access to high-quality calcium.

Origin and Distribution

As the name suggests, this specific line of Porcellio flavomarginatus is endemic to the island of Crete, Greece.

Evolved in a harsh, sun-drenched Mediterranean environment, these isopods are masters of drought resistance. In the wild, they are found clinging to the underside of limestone boulders and within deep rocky fissures. Because Crete experiences long, dry summers, this locality has become one of the most sensitive to over-misting in the hobby, making them ideal for keepers who maintain a "dryer" style of husbandry.

Diet

  • Primary: Large amounts of dry leaf litter and decaying white wood.
  • Protein: High Demand. Provide dried shrimp, fish flakes, or insect-based protein 1-2 times a week.
  • Vitamins: Occasional fresh vegetables like squash or carrots.
  • Calcium: Mandatory for maintaining their wide, armored carapaces.

What You Receive

  • Starter culture of X Porcellio flavomarginatus "Crete" isopods.
  • Mixed sizes (juveniles and sub-adults) to ensure a successful colony transition.
