Product Description

Porcellio flavomarginatus (commonly known as the "Yellow-Margin Isopod") is a true masterpiece of the Mediterranean isopod world. This species is famous for its striking aesthetics: a wide, flattened body with a dark slate-grey center, beautifully framed by vivid yellow or cream-colored margins (epimera).

This is a "giant" species that commands attention. Beyond its colors, P. flavomarginatus is known for its broad, pancake-like shape, which allows it to press firmly against surfaces. They are an active, bold species that loves to climb and explore their environment. While they are efficient decomposers, their unique beauty makes them a premier choice for high-end display terrariums and serious collectors.

Perfect for Mediterranean bioactive setups, large display enclosures, and collectors who appreciate high-contrast patterns and "giant" morphology.

Species Information

  • Species: Porcellio flavomarginatus
  • Origin: Mediterranean Basin (Primarily Southern Europe / Greece / Turkey)
  • Size: ~2.5 cm (Large and very broad)
  • Activity Level: High / Bold
  • Rarity: Uncommon / High-End Collector Choice

Care Requirements

  • Difficulty: Moderate (Requires careful humidity management)
  • Humidity: Low to Medium. This species is very sensitive to excessive moisture. They must have a "dry-to-moist" gradient: 80% of the enclosure should be dry, with only one corner of damp moss.
  • Temperature: 20–27°C (68–80°F). They thrive in warmer, stable environments.
  • Ventilation: Extreme/Maximum. Excellent cross-ventilation is non-negotiable for this species; they do not tolerate stagnant air.
  • Substrate: Well-draining organic soil mix with a heavy layer of dry hardwood leaf litter.

Must Provide:

  • Large, flat pieces of cork bark or limestone (they love to hide in dry, vertical crevices).
  • Abundant dry leaf litter (Oak, Beech, or Sycamore).
  • A small, consistently damp "hydration station" in one corner.
  • A constant, high-quality calcium source (cuttlebone).

Origin and Distribution

Porcellio flavomarginatus is native to the Eastern Mediterranean, with populations found in regions like Greece and Turkey.

Coming from these sun-baked, rocky environments, they have evolved to be exceptionally drought-tolerant. In the wild, their flattened bodies allow them to wedge into tight rock fissures to escape predators and the heat of the day. Because they come from semi-arid landscapes, they are much more sensitive to "over-misting" than other isopods, making them perfect for keepers who prefer a "dryer" style of husbandry.

Diet

  • Primary: Large amounts of dry leaf litter and decaying white wood.
  • Protein: High Demand. Provide dried shrimp, fish flakes, or insect-based protein 1-2 times a week to support their large size.
  • Vitamins: Occasional fresh vegetables like squash, carrots, or sweet potato.
  • Calcium: Crucial for maintaining their wide, armored carapaces.

What You Receive

  • Starter culture of X Porcellio flavomarginatus isopods.
