Product Details

Product Description

Porcellio hoffmannseggi "sordidus" is a spectacular and highly sought-after subspecies of the legendary Spanish Titan. While it shares the massive size and iconic long uropods of the nominal P. hoffmannseggi, the "sordidus" variant is prized for its unique mottled appearance.

Instead of a uniform slate-grey, this subspecies features a dark charcoal base adorned with irregular pale speckles and blotches, giving it a rugged, weathered look. Its wide, translucent margins (the "skirt") are exceptionally pronounced, creating a beautiful contrast with its textured back. This is a heavy-bodied, "armored" isopod that looks like a prehistoric relic wandering through the leaf litter.

Perfect for advanced Mediterranean displays, specialized giant isopod collections, and keepers who want a "Titan" with a more complex and naturalistic pattern.

Species Information

  • Species: Porcellio hoffmannseggi "sordidus"
  • Origin: Southern Spain / Western Mediterranean
  • Size: ~3.5–4.0 cm (excluding the long uropods)
  • Activity Level: High / Very Bold
  • Rarity: Uncommon / High-End Collector Choice

Care Requirements

  • Difficulty: Moderate (Success depends on space and airflow)
  • Humidity: Low to Medium. They require a very strict moisture gradient. Keep 80% of the enclosure bone-dry, with one large corner of damp sphagnum moss. They are highly sensitive to stagnant, wet air.
  • Temperature: 20–27°C (68–80°F). They are well-adapted to Mediterranean warmth.
  • Ventilation: Extreme/Maximum. Excellent cross-ventilation is mandatory for their health and successful molting.
  • Substrate: Deep organic soil mix with extra calcium and a heavy layer of dry hardwood leaf litter.

Must Provide:

  • Large Vertical Cork Bark: They love to climb and congregate on vertical surfaces.
  • Thick layers of dry leaf litter: They are voracious eaters of Oak and Beech.
  • A dedicated "hydration station" (damp moss corner).
  • Constant access to high-quality calcium (cuttlebone).

Origin and Distribution

Porcellio hoffmannseggi sordidus is native to the Iberian Peninsula, primarily found in the rocky and semi-arid regions of Southern Spain.

Evolved to thrive in limestone-rich environments, this subspecies is a master of survival in dry climates. In the wild, they are found deep within rock fissures and under massive stone slabs where the air remains breezy but they can find pockets of humidity. Their robust "armored" build and large size allow them to dominate their local ecosystem as primary decomposers.

Diet

  • Primary: Massive amounts of dry leaf litter and decaying white-rotted wood.
  • Protein: Very High Demand. To support their growth and massive size, provide dried shrimp, fish flakes, or minnows 2-3 times a week.
  • Vitamins: Occasional fresh vegetables like squash, carrots, or sweet potato.
  • Calcium: Crucial. Essential for their thick, calcified armor and heavy molts.
