Product Description

Porcellio hoffmannseggi (The "Titan Isopod") is a legendary giant of the Mediterranean and a true centerpiece for any serious collector. This species is famous for its colossal size and its incredibly long, spear-like uropods, which give it an unmistakable, prehistoric silhouette.

The "Hoff" is a master of the vertical world; despite their heavy, armored appearance, they are prolific climbers and very active during the evening. Their coloration is a sophisticated matte slate-grey with wide, translucent margins and a pale, almost white "skirt." While they are a "giant" species, they possess a regal and steady movement that makes them an absolute joy to observe in a large display.

Perfect for massive Mediterranean displays, advanced keepers, and collectors who want one of the largest terrestrial isopods on the planet.

Species Information

  • Species: Porcellio hoffmannseggi
  • Origin: Southern Spain / North Africa
  • Size: ~3.5–4.0 cm (excluding the massive uropods)
  • Activity Level: High / Bold Climber
  • Rarity: Popular / High-End Prestige Species

Care Requirements

  • Difficulty: Moderate (Success depends on space and ventilation)
  • Humidity: Low to Medium. They require a strict moisture gradient. Keep 75% of the enclosure dry, with one corner of damp sphagnum moss. They are sensitive to "stuffy" or overly wet conditions.
  • Temperature: 20–27°C (68–80°F). They are very tolerant of warmth.
  • Ventilation: High/Excellent. Significant cross-ventilation is mandatory for their respiratory health and successful molting.
  • Substrate: Deep organic soil mix with plenty of calcium and a heavy layer of dry leaf litter.

Must Provide:

  • Large Vertical Cork Bark: They love to congregate on vertical surfaces.
  • Abundant dry hardwood leaf litter: They are heavy eaters.
  • A dedicated "hydration station" (damp moss corner).
  • Constant access to high-quality calcium (cuttlebone).

Origin and Distribution

Porcellio hoffmannseggi is native to the Iberian Peninsula (Southern Spain) and parts of North Africa.

Evolved in the rugged, rocky landscapes of the Western Mediterranean, this species is built for survival in semi-arid environments. In the wild, they are often found in limestone caves, rocky crevices, and under large logs. Their massive size and thick armor allow them to withstand drier air than most isopods, but they still require a moist retreat to rehydrate and molt successfully.

Diet

  • Primary: They consume large quantities of dry leaf litter and decaying white wood.
  • Protein: Very High Demand. To support their massive bodies, provide dried shrimp, fish flakes, or minnows 2-3 times a week.
  • Vitamins: Occasional fresh vegetables like carrots, squash, or sweet potato.
  • Calcium: Crucial. Essential for their thick, calcified armor and frequent, heavy molts.

What You Receive

  • Starter culture of X Porcellio hoffmannseggi isopods.
  • Mixed sizes (juveniles and sub-adults) to ensure a stable, breeding-ready colony.
