Product Description

Porcellio magnificus is the ultimate crown jewel of the isopod hobby. As its name suggests, this is a truly magnificent giant, representing one of the largest and most impressive species in the entire Porcellio genus. It is highly coveted for its massive size, reaching lengths that make almost any other isopod look small in comparison.

Beyond its sheer scale, P. magnificus is famous for its vibrant orange-to-terracotta coloration and its incredibly long, elegant uropods. They possess a broad, powerful build and a bold, regal presence. This is a high-energy species that is frequently active and visible, making it the absolute centerpiece of any high-end invertebrate collection or large Mediterranean display.

Perfect for advanced collectors, massive bioactive exhibits, and anyone looking for the "Titan" of the isopod world.

Species Information

  • Species: Porcellio magnificus
  • Origin: Southern Spain (Andalusia / Málaga region)
  • Size: ~3.5–4.5 cm (The true giant of the genus)
  • Activity Level: High / Very Bold
  • Rarity: Rare / High-End Prestige Species

Care Requirements

  • Difficulty: Moderate to Advanced (Success depends on space and airflow)
  • Humidity: Low to Medium. They require a very precise moisture gradient. 80% of the enclosure should be kept dry, with one large "hydration station" of damp sphagnum moss. They are sensitive to "soggy" substrates.
  • Temperature: 22–28°C (72–82°F). They thrive in warm, Mediterranean conditions.
  • Ventilation: Extreme/Maximum. Due to their large size and high metabolism, they require massive amounts of fresh air. Cross-ventilation is mandatory.
  • Substrate: Deep, nutrient-rich organic soil mixed with extra calcium and a thick layer of dry hardwood leaf litter.

Must Provide:

  • Extra Large Cork Bark: They need plenty of space to hide and move.
  • Massive amounts of leaf litter: They are voracious eaters.
  • A large, consistently damp moss corner.
  • Constant, high-quality calcium source (cuttlebone).

Origin and Distribution

Porcellio magnificus is endemic to a very specific region in Southern Spain, particularly around the rocky hills of Málaga.

Evolved in a harsh, sun-drenched environment, this species is a master of the Mediterranean climate. In the wild, they are found in deep limestone crevices and under large boulders where they can escape the summer heat. Their massive size allows them to store more moisture and travel longer distances than smaller species, but it also means they require a much larger enclosure in captivity to flourish.

Diet

  • Primary: They consume huge quantities of dry leaf litter and decaying wood.
  • Protein: Extremely High Demand. To maintain their massive bodies, they need frequent protein (dried minnows, shrimp, or high-protein pellets) 3 times a week.
  • Vitamins: Fresh vegetables like squash, carrots, and sweet potato.
  • Calcium: Absolute Requirement. Crucial for their massive, thick carapaces and frequent, heavy molts.

What You Receive

  • Starter culture of X Porcellio magnificus isopods.
  • Mixed sizes (juveniles and sub-adults) to ensure a healthy, long-term breeding colony.
