Product Details

Product Description

Porcellio sp. "Málaga Monster" is a heavyweight champion of the isopod world. This stunning "giant" locality from Southern Spain is famous for its massive, robust body and its incredibly bold personality. While related to other Spanish giants, the "Málaga Monster" is prized for its sheer bulk and its deep, dark slate-grey coloration, often accented by clean white margins.

This is not a shy species. The "Málaga Monster" is a high-energy, visible inhabitant that spends much of its time exploring the enclosure or congregating on cork bark. Due to their impressive size—reaching lengths that rival small shrimp—they are a favorite for large display terrariums. They are efficient cleaners, but their primary appeal is their prehistoric, "armored tank" appearance.

Perfect for large Mediterranean bioactive setups, advanced collectors, and anyone looking for the most "monstrous" and active isopod available.

Species Information

  • Species: Porcellio sp Malaga "Monter"
  • Locality: Málaga (Southern Spain / Andalusia)
  • Size: ~3.0–4.0 cm (One of the largest and bulkiest Porcellio)
  • Activity Level: Extremely High / Bold
  • Rarity: Popular / High-End Collector Choice

Care Requirements

  • Difficulty: Easy to Moderate (Once ventilation is mastered)
  • Humidity: Low to Medium. They require a strict moisture gradient. 75% of the enclosure should be kept dry, with one corner of damp sphagnum moss for hydration and molting.
  • Temperature: 22–28°C (72–82°F). They thrive in warmer, Mediterranean-style conditions.
  • Ventilation: High/Excellent. Stagnant air is their enemy; significant cross-ventilation is mandatory.
  • Substrate: Deep organic soil mix with plenty of calcium and a heavy layer of dry hardwood leaf litter.

Must Provide:

  • Large Cork Bark: They love vertical space and will often pile on top of each other on bark hides.
  • Thick layers of dry hardwood leaf litter (Oak/Beech).
  • A dedicated "hydration station" (damp moss corner).
  • Constant access to high-quality calcium (cuttlebone).

Origin and Distribution

As indicated by its name, this giant isopod is native to the Málaga region in Southern Spain (Andalusia).

Living in one of the hottest and driest parts of Europe, the "Málaga Monster" has evolved to be incredibly resilient to heat and semi-arid conditions. In the wild, they are found in rocky areas and under the bark of ancient trees, where they remain protected from the intense Spanish sun. Their large size is an advantage in their native habitat, allowing them to travel further in search of food and mates.

Diet

  • Primary: Voracious eaters of dry leaf litter and decaying white wood.
  • Protein: Very High Demand. These "monsters" have a predatory appetite for protein. Provide dried shrimp, fish flakes, or minnows 2-3 times a week.
  • Vitamins: Occasional fresh vegetables like carrots, squash, or sweet potato.
  • Calcium: Crucial. Essential to support their thick, massive carapaces and frequent molts.
