Product Details

Product Description

Porcellio scaber is a classic staple in the isopod hobby and one of the hardiest species available. It is easily recognized by its distinctively "bumpy" or granulated exoskeleton, which gives it a rugged, textured appearance compared to its smooth relatives.

The P. scaber is a versatile survivor, capable of thriving in a wider range of conditions than almost any other isopod. They are excellent primary decomposers, working tirelessly to process leaf litter and organic matter. While they are bold and active, they are also famous for their incredible variety of color morphs, ranging from deep slate grays to vibrant oranges and mottled "Dalmatian" patterns.

An ideal choice for beginner keepers, temperate bioactive setups, and collectors who appreciate a species with a unique tactile look.

Origin and Distribution

Porcellio scaber is a cosmopolitan species that originated in Western and Central Europe. Because of its high tolerance for cooler, temperate climates, it was one of the first isopods to spread globally through European colonization and the plant trade.

Today, it is found in the wild across North America, Australia, and parts of Africa and South America. It is particularly well-known for its ability to live in coastal areas and gardens where other isopods might struggle.
