Product Description

Porcellio spatulatus (commonly known as the "Shield Isopod" or "Pancake Isopod") is one of the most morphologically unique species in the hobby. It is famous for its extreme dorso-ventral flattening, possessing a body so thin and wide that it appears almost two-dimensional.

This "pancake" shape is a specialized adaptation that allows them to cling tightly to the underside of rocks, making them nearly impossible for predators to flip over. They feature a beautiful, subtle coloration—usually a dusty slate gray or brownish hue—that provides perfect camouflage against limestone. While they are a "giant" species in terms of width, they move with a slow, deliberate grace that makes them a fascinating subject for high-end display terrariums.

Perfect for Mediterranean-style bioactive setups, specialized rock-dwelling displays, and advanced collectors who prize unique anatomical adaptations.

Species Information

  • Species: Porcellio spatulatus
  • Origin: Central Mediterranean (Primarily Italy / North Africa)
  • Size: ~2.5 cm (Notably wide and flat)
  • Activity Level: Moderate / Reclusive
  • Rarity: Uncommon / High-End Collector Choice

Care Requirements

  • Difficulty: Moderate (Sensitive to over-misting)
  • Humidity: Low. This species is highly adapted to arid environments. They require a very dry enclosure with only a small, localized "hydration station" (damp moss) in one corner.
  • Temperature: 20–26°C (68–79°F).
  • Ventilation: Extreme/Maximum. Stagnant air is the primary cause of failure with this species. Significant cross-ventilation is mandatory.
  • Substrate: Well-draining organic soil mixed with crushed limestone or calcium sand.

Must Provide:

  • Flat rocks or slate: They prefer hiding under heavy, flat objects rather than cork bark.
  • Dry hardwood leaf litter (Oak/Beech).
  • A tiny, consistently damp corner.
  • Constant access to high-quality calcium.

Origin and Distribution

Porcellio spatulatus is native to the Central Mediterranean, with strong populations found in Italy and parts of North Africa.

They have evolved to survive in rocky, semi-arid landscapes where they spend their days wedged into the tightest fissures of limestone outcrops. This specialized lifestyle has resulted in their "spatulate" (spoon-like or flattened) shape. Because their native habitat experiences long periods of drought, they are exceptionally sensitive to high humidity and require a keeper who can maintain a "dry and airy" environment.

Diet

  • Primary: Dry leaf litter and decaying white wood.
  • Protein: Moderate demand. Provide dried shrimp or fish flakes once a week.
  • Vitamins: Occasional fresh vegetables (sweet potato or squash).
  • Calcium: Critically Important. Their wide, flat shells require significant calcium for successful molting.

What You Receive

  • Starter culture of X Porcellio spatulatus isopods.
  • Mixed sizes (juveniles and sub-adults) to ensure a stable colony start.
