Product Description

Porcellio violaceus "Rubivan" is a true masterpiece of nature and a legendary gem among isopod collectors. Is a rare aesthetic that sets it apart from almost any other terrestrial crustacean. The "Rubivan" lineage is particularly prized for the intensity of this hue and its impressive size.

Native to North Africa, this isopod features a wide, robust body with elegantly long antennae and uropods. Its exoskeleton has a velvety, matte texture that makes the tones pop against natural backgrounds. Despite its delicate appearance, it is a bold and active species that thrives in specialized Mediterranean setups. Seeing a group of these "Giants" moving through a terrarium is a highlight for any invertebrate enthusiast.

Perfect for elite prestige collections, high-contrast display terrariums, and advanced keepers looking for the most colorful giant in the hobby.

Species Information

  • Species: Porcellio "Rubivan"
  • Morph/Lineage: "Rubivan"
  • Origin: North Africa (Morocco / Algeria region)
  • Size: ~2.5–3.2 cm (A large and imposing species)
  • Activity Level: High / Very Bold
  • Rarity: Extremely Rare / Top-Tier Collector Species

Care Requirements

  • Difficulty: Moderate to Advanced (Requires precise moisture control)
  • Humidity: Low. This species is highly adapted to arid environments and is sensitive to "stuffy" or wet air. Keep 90% of the enclosure bone-dry, providing only a small, localized corner of damp sphagnum moss.
  • Temperature: 22–28°C (72–82°F). They thrive in warm, stable conditions.
  • Ventilation: Extreme/Maximum. High-volume cross-ventilation is mandatory to ensure their respiratory health.
  • Substrate: Arid organic soil mix enriched with crushed limestone and plenty of dry hardwood leaf litter.

Must Provide:

  • Flat Cork Bark or Slate: They love to hide under dry, flat surfaces during the day.
  • Thick layers of dry hardwood leaf litter (Oak/Beech).
  • A tiny, consistently damp "hydration station" in one corner.
  • Constant access to high-quality calcium (cuttlebone).

Origin and Distribution

Porcellio violaceus is native to the semi-arid, rocky regions of North Africa, specifically found in parts of Morocco and Algeria.

Living in environments characterized by limestone outcrops and intense sunlight, they have evolved to be highly drought-resistant. The "Rubivan" lineage has been carefully maintained in the hobby to preserve the striking violet pigmentation that makes this species so iconic. Because they come from such dry habitats, they have almost no tolerance for over-misting, making them a rewarding challenge for experienced keepers.

Diet

  • Primary: Voracious eaters of dry leaf litter and decaying white-rotted wood.
  • Protein: High Demand. Provide dried shrimp, fish flakes, or minnows 2 times a week to support their growth.
  • Vitamins: Occasional fresh vegetables like carrots, squash, or sweet potato.
  • Calcium: Absolute Requirement. Essential for their thick, colorful carapaces and successful molting.

What You Receive
