Product Description

Trachelipus mostarensis is a robust and visually striking giant hailing from the rugged landscapes of the Balkans. This species is highly sought after for its massive, broad-bodied silhouette and its elegant "tuxedo" coloration. It features a deep, charcoal-grey to midnight-black base, dramatically framed by thick, brilliant white-to-cream margins (epimera) that accentuate its impressive width.

Unlike some of the more delicate Mediterranean giants, T. mostarensis is known for its exceptional hardiness and bold personality. They are powerful explorers, frequently seen moving across the substrate or climbing cork bark with a steady, confident gait. Their large size, combined with their striking monochrome contrast, makes them a premiere display species that brings a "prehistoric" feel to any enclosure.

Perfect for high-contrast display terrariums, Balkan-themed bioactive setups, and intermediate keepers looking for a large, hardy, and prolific giant species.

Species Information

  • Species: Trachelipus mostarensis
  • Origin: The Balkans (Specifically Bosnia and Herzegovina / Mostar region)
  • Size: ~2.5–3.0 cm (Very wide and heavy-bodied)
  • Activity Level: High / Very Bold
  • Rarity: Uncommon / High-End European Giant

Care Requirements

  • Difficulty: Easy to Moderate (Very resilient once established)
  • Humidity: Medium. They prefer a more balanced environment than arid Spanish species. Maintain a 60/40 moisture gradient: keep one half of the enclosure damp with sphagnum moss and the other half dry.
  • Temperature: 18–25°C (64–77°F). They are very tolerant of cooler temperate conditions but should be protected from extreme heat above 28°C.
  • Ventilation: Moderate to High. They appreciate fresh air but are less prone to desiccation than Porcellio giants.
  • Substrate: Rich organic soil mix enriched with calcium, limestone, and a thick layer of hardwood leaf litter.

Must Provide:

  • Large, Flat Cork Bark: They love to congregate in groups under wide, dry pieces of bark.
  • Abundant Leaf Litter: Oak and Beech are their primary food sources.
  • A large, consistently damp "hydration station."
  • Constant access to high-quality calcium (cuttlebone).

Diet

  • Primary: Voracious consumers of dry leaf litter and decaying white-rotted wood.
  • Protein: High Demand. Provide dried shrimp, fish flakes, or minnows 2-3 times a week to support their large frames.
  • Vitamins: They enjoy fresh vegetables like squash, carrots, and sweet potato.
  • Calcium: Absolute Requirement. Crucial for their thick, wide, and heavily calcified carapaces.

What You Receive

  • Starter culture of X Trachelipus mostarensis isopods.
  • Mixed sizes (juveniles and sub-adults) to ensure a strong and rapidly breeding colony.
